Welcome to Sunday Breakfast!

1. The Orange Juice 🍊

This guy had over 25 failed side projects.

And he was about to give up before he saw an interesting tweet:

Can someone please build an app to manage my email inbox?

He decided to take one more shot:

Within a few weeks he had an MVP.

And within 3 months he was already making a profit!

Today he does $30K MRR and is still growing.

Great example of finding a real problem and solving it fast.

2. The Coffee ☕

This guy was trying to think of what to build for his final school project.

Him and his buddy played a dominoes every night, so he thought:

Can I build a website around this?

He created a dead-simple website with Adobe Flash and published it.

It turned out that literally thousands of people had the same exact interest.

For less than $500, he built a website that now brings in $16K per month!

3. The Eggs 🍳

There’s a strategy called: “be the barnacle on the whale”

It means to find a fast-growing thing…and get your little slice of it.

And that’s exactly what this guy did.

He saw that Notion was exploding in popularity, so he decided to get in the game.

He built a simple plugin in literally 4 days and grew it to $10K MRR in ONE year

Insane story.

4. The Toast 🥪

This dude just loves his trucks.

So he wanted to customize the look and feel of them.

But… he literally couldn’t find anything for HIS exact car model.

He dug around online and found that hundreds of other people had the same problem.

He knew a guy who built custom car grills and they had a product in 3 weeks.

Within a month he had completely sold out!

Crazy validation.

5. The Pancakes 🥞

He was sick of using PDF software that had too many features.

So he decided to build a simplified version:

What if you could easily edit a PDF file without downloading anything?

In less than a year he was making $10K MRR.

Today he does over $500K per year.

He replaced his entire salary by solving ONE problem.

"You hired your wife?"

Read this in 2 min, 30 sec
The first person I hired at Starter Story?

Someone by the name of... Samantha Walls.

People get confused when they see this...

“Pat... did you hire your wife?”

No, I did not.

But we do happen to share the same last name.

And you what's even crazier?

When I hired her, Starter Story was making $5,000 per month.

Today, it's making over $250,000 per month.

Mostly thanks to her.

Today, I want to tell you that story.

In two minutes, I will convince you on why you should build a family business.
Barkbox Incentive + Expiration Date
Samantha Walls – Sam – is my little sister.

One of my favorite people in the world.

And when the world went to shit in 2020, she was one of the first people I knew that lost her job.

I’m getting flashbacks to the day she called me:

Pat… they let me go. There’s nothing they could do. This sucks.

I was devastated for her. And I just wanted to help.

But… Starter Story was in the dumps too.

I was not focused.
I was distracted by 15 other projects.
The business was not growing.

I was stuck at like $5K/month.
Barely getting by.

But I felt like I had to do something.

Sam… I don’t have a lot… but maybe you can help me with a few projects?
I can pay you… but I can only pay you $15/hour for a few hours a week.

Her response?

No hesitation – YES!!

Now here’s what you don’t know about my sister:

She’s the hardest working person I know.

And when I hired her, I had a tiny thought in the back of my mind:

Maybe this could be the start of something great?
Barkbox Incentive + Expiration Date
A week later we jumped on the phone to check in.

She had already dissected my ENTIRE business:

Pat you’re leaving money on the table here, here, and here.
I think you should optimize this page.
If you do XY&Z, I think you'll make a LOT more money.
What do you think?

I was blown away.

Not gonna lie… I wasn't thinking about any of that stuff.

I was stuck in the weeds, fixing bugs and adding pointless features.

I wasn't thinking about marketing at all.

(the important stuff)

F*ck it – let’s do it.
Sam... for the next couple months I'm gonna let you call the shots.
Whatever you think will grow the business... I support it.

We got to work.

Within a matter of days, we start seeing results.

More people to the site.
More people opting in.
More people paying us money.

And here’s the craziest part:

Sam was just one year out of college - she didn’t know anything about internet businesses.

But what she did know…

She knew how to sell.
She knew how to operate.
She knew how to just dig her heels in and figure it out.

It was exactly what I needed.

I wrote the code.
She did the marketing.

I focused on writing and building an audience.
She focused on sales.

I was good at big picture stuff.
She was good at the day to day.
Barkbox Incentive + Expiration Date
The results were clear.

The business essentially doubled overnight.

I realized that my solopreneur days were over.

It was time to build a team.

I asked her to come on full time and offered her a real salary.

But... everyone told me:

"YOU'RE AN IDIOT. Whatever you do… DON’T go into business with family."

But I think that's bullsh*t.

Family === trust.

And trust is everything when it comes to building a team.

But... here’s the caveat: it wasn’t blind trust.

I hired her in a part time capacity.

Then she proved herself and went way above and beyond my expectations.

She loved sales.
She loved thinking of ways to grow.
She loved operating the business.

And she was damn GOOD at it.

Together, we absolutely transformed the business.

Growing it 50x in just a few years.

If it weren't for her, I'd probably still be just getting by.

But now... we're building one of the biggest businesses in our space.

That is the power of a family business.

Your first million

Read this in 1 minute, 20 seconds
So there’s this guy I’ve been following for a few years.

His name is Lane.

He started a website called "boot.dev".

And holy sh*t... I've never seen a business take off like this...

This is what his business journey looks like:

• Year 1: $0
• Year 2: $1K/mo
• Year 3: $6K/mo
• Year 4: $16K/mo
• Year 5: $76K/mo
• Year 6: $291K PER MONTH….
Barkbox Incentive + Expiration Date
Like are you f*cking kidding me?

I can't stop thinking about his business...

"How did he do this?
What growth tactic did he use?"

So I did a ton of research on his business.

And I think I found the answer.

But... it's not what you think...

––

Yes, he did some really smart marketing stuff, like sponsoring creators on YouTube.

But... there's something deeper.

I think his success has more to do with the fundamentals of his business.

Lane's business went from average to $3M+/year because... he built a product that helps people learn a skill that will improve their lives.

In other words, he built a business around teaching.

I think that if you're starting your first business... the business that will turn you into a millionaire... this is the best type of business to start.

Why though?... Why is teaching such a great business model?

Here's why:

(1) Educational businesses get a head start thanks to the built-in knowledge of its founders

So... before starting this business, Lane knew how to code.

Years before even starting the business, he was building up expertise in his product and his target customer (whether he knew it or not).

In other words, Lane was able to get his business off the ground quickly without having to learn anything new.

Sure, he had to learn about some new stuff like marketing and distribution, but he didn't have to learn much about the customer.

This gave him a massive, multiple year advantage IMO.

A head start! (that he wouldn't have if he started a business selling fidget spinners)

(2) Buyer psychology: Paying money for educational products feel like a no-brainer when compared to the cost of college.

A computer science degree at Stanford costs $200,000.

Lane's product costs $29/month.

Obviously, you get way more by going to Stanford, but in a way, these two products provide a similar outcome: learning how to code.

This is a form of price anchoring and it helps convince potential customers Lane's product is worth far more than $29.

$29/month feels like a steal compared to $200,000, right!!?

(3) The cost of teaching someone is zero, and the distribution is... the entire world

Here's the beauty of educational products: they have virtually a 100% profit margin.

(digital ones like Lane's, of course)

For every new customer that lands on his website and pays for his product, it costs him virtually nothing.

100 more people try his product. 1,000 more people try his product.

It costs $0 extra.

The entire world could use his product, and it wouldn't cost him much more.

The marginal cost of teaching people is zero, yet his distribution is the entire world.
––

These are the reasons why I think teaching people might be the best FIRST business to start.

Because everyone – yes, even you – has experiences in this world.

You can figure out your unique skills in 5 minutes if you wanted to.

Just write down the following:

– FT job
– PT job
– Hobbies
– Knowledge
– Passion
– Curiosity
– Obsession

You don’t have to be an expert. Lane sure wasn’t!

But he figured out how to be useful based on experiences he already had.

Here are two simple questions you can ask yourself:
  1. Who is a few steps behind me that could benefit from my experience?
  2. What do friends and family already come to me for advice about?
Someone is out there behind you on a similar journey.

And they’re just waiting for you to show up and guide them.

––

I want to help you identify your thing:

Your skills
Your knowledge
Your passions

Because I truly believe you have a million-dollar idea inside of you.

Where I’ll talk about how I turned my skills into $1M.

And I’ll show you how to turn your skills into money.

– Pat

I hate this time of year.

Read this in 1 minute, 41 seconds
I HATE this time of the year.

Why? Because it's tax season and my accountant will not stop pestering me.

Asking me a million questions about invoices, expenses, etc.

But yesterday she called me with something different:

"Hey Pat… I'm looking at Quickbooks and I think there’s something wrong... Is your revenue *really* this high?"

I let her know the number was correct.

"Well congrats then... Did you realize that your business grew 3x over last year?"

Woah.

I took a pause to let that sink in.

Then... she told me something even crazier...

"Pat, I've never seen anything like this before... but, other than 2022, your business has grown AT LEAST 3X every year since you started!!"
Barkbox Incentive + Expiration Date
Even I couldn’t believe it…

This was a proud founder moment for me.

But then... it got me thinking:

Why did this happen? What's the trend here?

Here’s what I believe:

––

There are just two things I attribute to growing 3x nearly every year.

(Thing 1) Cultivate a 'growth mindset'.

When I started out, I thought I’d be lucky just to make back my salary.

But as soon as I got a little taste of what it felt like to grow… to see those numbers go up... I wanted more.

I had unlocked something I didn’t know was possible:

I inserted hard work into the machine, and it spit out money.

And every single day I wanted to chase that growth and pour more gas on it.

And over time, I figured out which levers to pull so that I could grow year, after year, after year.

Every successful founder I know is obsessed with growth.

"If you're not growing, you're dying"

––

(Thing 2) Study ACTUALLY successful businesses:

This is the tactical stuff, the real secret sauce :)

At every critical point in the business, I studied and surrounded myself with people more successful than me.

I soaked up as MUCH information as possible from real people making real money.

For example:

When I was doing $500K/year, I did a case study on a solopreneur making nearly $2M/year.

I made sure to ask him everything I needed to know, because I wanted to get where he is.

And he gave me ALL the answers:

• What he did.
• How he did it.
• Why he did it.
• What actually worked.
• What to avoid.

I read that case study 10 times over, just to make sure I didn't miss ANYTHING.

My head was buzzing.

I knew exactly what I needed to do next.

And I went out an executed the sh*t out of that playbook.

I’ve done this 4 or 5 times now.

I studied Reddit marketing.
I studied email marketing.
I studied SEO.
I studied YouTube.
I studied copywriting and funnels.

And I got all of them to f*cking work.

It’s simple:

1. Identify successful businesses making real money
2. Proactively study exactly what they do
3. Take extreme action

This is the exact formula I follow to this day.

And it’s exactly what I want you to do if you want to grow.

––

They say you are the average of the 5 people you surround yourself with.

Starter Story has 4,000+ case studies – 4,000+ people – who have shared everything about their business:

How they got customers
How they made money
How they pivoted
How they scaled

Real business. Real Numbers. Real people.

So whether you are building your first project or trying to scale,

Starter Story has the exact formula you need to grow.

There’s only one thing standing between you and 3X revenue:

Hey it's Pat from Starter Story,

My favorite founders are the ones who validate their ideas fast.

Remember: always start by solving a real problem for a real customer.

Once you do that, your idea just might take off!

Today: 5 founders who solved problems and changed their lives.

Study these, take all the lessons, and apply it to your biz.

I can’t wait to see what you build.

Welcome to Sunday Breakfast!

1. The Orange Juice 🍊

So this guy gets the news every FT employee dreads…

He got laid off.

Worst part?

He got the notice while on vacation!

But instead of sulking around… he started building.

10 days later he had an MVP, launched it, and got PAYING customers.

This is the perfect example of not overthinking and validating FAST.

2. The Coffee ☕

This guy found the perfect problem:

Learning to code is boring and expensive.

He solved it by launching gamified coding courses for cheap.

He built the MVP fast and slowly started growing.

• $3K/mo in the first 6 months
• $10K/mo in year 1
• $26K/mo in year 2

Today?

$291K… PER MONTH 🤯

But none of them ever took off.

Why?

He never solve a REAL problem!

He built sh*t w/o validating the idea.

So he found a simple problem, built a quick MVP, and sure enough…

4. The Toast 🥪

So this guy quit his job, sold everything, bought a van, and started living out of it.

All he wanted was freedom to do whatever he wanted, whenever he wanted (relatable)

Then he saw this random YT video that inspired a crazy idea…

What if I sold all-natural, organic products?

Cool… but that’s been done a million times, right?

Wrong.

He found a unique audience with his unique brand

And turned it into a $5M/year profitable business.

Insane.

5. The Pancakes 🥞

She had been building side projects for years (mostly for fun).

Then one day she ran into a problem while giving a presentation for work:

She couldn’t easily time her presentation.

Sounds simple enough to solve, right?

So she built a little app for herself over the weekend and thought nothing of it.

But she kept seeing this problem everywhere.

So she posted the idea on Reddit… and it TOOK OFF!

Within 6 months, she had enough paying customers to quit her FT job.

It’s insane because… it’s SO simple...It’s just a countdown timer.

But it solves a real problem for real people.

I love it!

––
That's it!

I hope you have the best Sunday, and are getting ready for a great week ahead!

Pat

"How did you build 200k email list?"

Read this in 1 minute, 19 seconds
Every day I get a DM like this:

Yo Pat…
How did you get 100K subs on YouTube?
How did you grow your email list to 200K?
How do 1.5M people visit your website monthly?

What’s the secret?

The people who ask these questions are NGMI.

Kidding… 😆

But if you really want to know the secret...

You’re in the right place.

––

I’ll cut right to the chase.

My strategy is always the same:

I study the most successful people doing THAT ONE THING… then I go DO IT.

• I wanted 100k YouTube subs, so I studied… Thomas Frank's channel.
• I wanted 1M visitors from SEO, so I studied… Food Truck Empire's blog.
• I wanted 100K email subscribers, so I studied… Matt Paulson's newsletter business.

(fyi these are all case studies on Starter Story)

Then, I become a detective.

I read the case study. I visit every page on their website. I join their email lists. I email the founder lots of questions.

I become a sponge and soak up all of the information I possibly can.

Then, I copy what worked for them, and avoid what didn't.

It’s that simple!

But... here’s the real secret:

I rarely study people in my own niche.

I go out and study random businesses in all sorts of niches, sometimes completely unrelated to my own.

Most importantly, I study businesses that are actually making money.

I do not study the latest trending marketing strategies or business models that everyone is talking about on Twitter.

I study what's actually working for real businesses.

––

Inside Starter Story, we have case studies in:

every industry
every niche
every sub-category

So whether you’re building a product, saas, service, or newsletter.

You can take lessons from any of the 4000+ case studies we have, and apply it to your thing.

REAL actions and REAL numbers behind REAL successful businesses.

Started by people just like you.

There are a thousand lessons waiting for you inside.

It’s simple.

Dan has a disease

2 min read
Today, I woke up, and chose violence.

This is the story of my good friend Dan.

Dan suffers from a disease called rejection avoidance.

I want you to avoid contracting this disease, because it can be deadly.

So I’m sending this email right now as a public service announcement.

Don’t be like Dan.

––

Ok a little background on Dan.

He started his business ~6 months ago.

And he reached out to me to get some feedback.

I started digging into his website. It was lookin’ pretty good!

So I asked him:

Dan, how’s the business going?

Zero traffic
Zero feedback
Zero customers

That couldn’t be right…

What’s going on here?

Well Pat, I’ve been mostly focused on SEO.
I’ve written 10 blog posts on various topics.
And I’ve hired a few people to start making TikToks.
Now I’m just waiting for my first email signup.
Hoping it will come in the next week.

Oh man, I’ve heard this before…

So I asked him a simple question:

Dan, have you shared this with anyone you actually know?

Have you posted this on your personal network, have you reached out to your dream customers, have you shared this on Reddit?

No. Nope. Nada.

Of course not…

––

I’ve seen this a million times.

New entrepreneurs want to do everything except the one most important thing:

Getting real feedback from the real world.

They’ll spend $5K on another course.
They’ll waste hours learning some SEO framework.
They’ll code 99 new features.

ALL TO AVOID TALKING TO HUMANS.

I literally don’t understand…

So I sacked up and told Dan the truth:

Dan… I HAVE to tell you this: you are focusing on all the wrong things.

YOU ARE AFRAID TO FAIL.

The only way you will ever know if this is going to work…

Is if you actually get your a** out there, and talk to real people.

Show it to your family, message friends on LinkedIn, do… ANYTHING.

I shared a few of my favorite case studies with him:

• Some friends who validated their idea in 3 hours
• A guy who got his first customer through his mom
• A girl who had paying customers WITHOUT a landing page

That last thing you need right now is… a strategy.

You NEED to talk to people.

It’s so simple to get your idea out there and validate it.

You could do it in 3 minutes!!!

But you’ve spent 6 months working on unimportant things rather than what’s actually important…

The right thing is often the scary thing.

So you put it off.

If you can’t face rejection, I promise you won’t be successful.

While you’ve been toying with your SEO strategy...

Hundreds of people have been launching similar businesses and making money within days.

All because… they’re not afraid to face a little rejection.

––

I kinda went a bit hard on Dan.

And he didn’t take it too well - but it’s what he needed to hear.

I will report back on what happens.

––

Inside Starter Story we have 4000+ examples of people just like you who built successful businesses BECAUSE they faced a little rejection.

They share all the insights you will ever need to get your business off the ground.

You’ll study how they got their FIRST customer.

And you’ll figure out how to land yours.

It’s time to start working on the right things.

^^ (don’t click that link if you’re not willing to face a little rejection)

It’s been 1,563 days since my last drink

Read time: 1 min, 30 sec
Hey there,

I quit drinking alcohol on December 15, 2019.

It might have been one the best personal decisions I’ve ever made.

But… this isn’t a story about why you shouldn’t drink.

It’s a story about sacrifice… and why you can’t be successful without it.

––
My entire social life revolved around alcohol.

I’d spend my Thursday, Friday and Saturday drinking socially.

I’d spend Sunday recovering.

And then I’d spend Mon-Thu waiting for the weekend (and doing it all over again)

But in the back of my mind, I knew this wasn’t the life I wanted.

I had dreams to quit my 9 to 5.
I had dreams to build businesses.
I had dreams to be financially free.

But drinking kept getting in the way of that.

Then, one Sunday, when I was hungover as balls, I turned on a random Joe Rogan podcast.

The guest told her story about how she quit drinking and subsequently became one of the biggest comedians in the world.

I knew the answer immediately.

Drinking didn’t add anything to my life.

So I quit.

And that’s when the hard part started.

––
When you go sober, you realize how integrated alcohol is in our world.

And that makes it even harder to quit.

In my case:

Friends stopped hanging out with me.
Women didn’t want to go on 2nd dates.
Weddings felt a bit awkward.

There were SO many times where I almost said:

F*ck it. This is too hard.

But… every time I said “no” to drinking, I said “yes” to something else.

I said no to:
Alcohol

And I said yes to:
• Working out twice per day
• Waking up early with a clear head
• More energy
• Insane focus
• Increased productivity
• New ideas

My weekends (that were full of drinking and hangovers) were now full of LIFE!

I now had hours and hours of time to focus on the things I actually wanted to do - follow my dreams!

And this was my aha moment.

––
I realized that this wasn’t about quitting drinking at all.

This was about sacrifice.

In order to get what I wanted, I had to give something else up.

If you’re on this email list, I bet you want one of two things:

1. Financial freedom
2. Time freedom

But if you want this life, you must sacrifice SOMETHING.

I can’t think of a single person who didn’t sacrifice something on their way to success.

Maybe it’s Netflix every night.
Maybe it’s sleeping in on weekends.
Maybe it’s happy hour with co-workers.

I don’t know what it is for you.

But I know you’re just one decision away from something great.

––
Next Thursday (next week) I’m running a free webinar to share with you my sacrifice.

It’s the story of how I built a $1M business on 2 hours a day.

And I’ll show you how I think you can do it too.

You will have to say no to something in order to be there.

But this Yes just might change your life.

– Pat

Hey there!

This week I'm headed to MIAMI! I'm hanging with founders and builders.

And enjoying a little tennis on the side :)

Today: 5 tiny side projects that turned into thousands per month.

These people prove that building MVPs and validating ideas is the best way to start a business.

No hacks or gimmicks. Just action.

I love it.

Welcome to Sunday Breakfast!

1. The Orange Juice 🍊

These indie founders were focused on building digital products.

But after creating a few things, they were stuck at $5K/mo.

For their next project, they decided to ship fast and keep costs low.

They invested $150 bucks into Bubble and built a new product in 3 weeks.

Then on launch day, they made $1K.

Within 6 months… they had made over $60K from this one product!

2. The Coffee ☕

This guy has been building side projects since 2021.

At his FT job, he ran into an annoying problem.

So he decided to solve it for himself.

He shared a simple demo on Twitter and people loved it.

But he didn’t even have a landing page!

So he set up a quick way to collect payments, and made $600 bucks on day one.

Here’s his formula:
• Find a problem
• Build a simple MVP
• Validate
• Scale

3. The Eggs 🍳

This guy was obsessed with making money online

(w/o selling his time).

But he didn’t really know where to start…

He loved using Notion, so he decided to build a business around it.

The first few months were rough (literally $0).

But he kept building.

Two years later, has a 200K following across social media

And he's sold $300K worth of digital products.

All by himself.

Together with Walmart

Be the next success story on Walmart.com

How did Miko grow by 115% GMV in just one year?*

He leveraged 2-day shipping with Walmart Fulfillment Services.

See, Miko had products sitting on his shelves that previously did not have 2-day shipping.

But with one click of a button, he increased GMV by 1573% on those items.

That's the Walmart Marketplace difference.

4. The Toast 🥪

So this guy is obsessed with one thing: golf

He drives all over the states to play with his buddies.

But he’s annoyed by this tiny problem that he couldn’t find a solution for.

Not even the ‘big guys’ can fix it.

So… he built it for himself.

Turns out a lot of other people have the same little problem.

Now he makes $3K/mo and he just started 3 months ago!

5. The Pancakes 🥞

This guy saw the same problem over and over again:

Where do you put your bags when you travel?

He had a wild idea:

Could bag storage as a service be a thing?

But he didn’t want to spend thousands to build a solution.

Here’s what he did instead:
• Built a basic landing page w/Typeform
• Ran a $5 Google search ad
• Landed his first customer literally within 5 minutes

In one year he bootstrapped it to $100K

Wow.

But wait 'til you read about how the biz almost died and what he did to keep it alive 👀

This story has so many twists and turns, you’ve just gotta read it for yourself.

–––

That's it!

I hope you have the best Sunday, and are getting ready for a great week ahead!

Pat

How bad do you really want this?

Read time: 2 min

Hey there,

So last week I told you the story about my wantrepreneur friend Ethan...

Remember him?

The “... I’m working on it” guy?

The all talk, no walk guy?

I've got bad news...

He read that email that I sent about him 😵‍💫

And he actually texted me the next day:

Hey Pat… can we talk?

We got on the phone and he got right into it:

Alright Pat, I read that email.
It kinda hurt, but I realized you were right.
I’ve put off actually building something for a long time…
And I think I’m ready.

Wow… not what I expected Ethan, but let’s go!

I’ve got a plan…
I saw this story on Twitter
About this business idea
This guy only works two hours a day
And makes $30k/month
I think I can do this.
And I think I can make it happen in like 4-6 months.

In this moment I wanted to scream at Ethan, but I kept my cool.

My response:

So Ethan...
You expect to make $30k/month?
Within 6 months?
All thanks to an idea you found on Twitter?

He responds:

Yeah I think it could be pretty easy.

Sh*t...

Guys, he said it...

He said the 4-letter word...
The word no successful founder has ever uttered.
The word: EASY.

I respond:

Ethan hold on man…let me ask you...
How bad do you really want this?

He then goes into a spiel about passive income and the 4 hour workweek and wanting to accomplish all of this fast.

I paused him again and said:

Hold on, hold on.

This journey is going to be a lot of things for you.

But there's one thing it's not going to be: easy.

There's a 99% chance you'll be grinding away at this for at least a year before you accomplish anything.

You need to remove the word easy from your vocabulary.

Ethan, I want you to think about if you actually really want this.... Let's talk next week?

––
I'll keep you guys updated on Ethan, but... here's the truth.

Building a business is hard.

Building a business is:

• Long nights tweaking a stupid line of code
• Writing tweets that get 1 like
• Launching something that nobody gives a sh*t about
• Staring at a computer screen begging for an idea

Building a business is also:

• 80% boring tasks
• 10% fixing shit
• 5% pain
• 4% fun
• 1% success

I don’t share this to scare you.

I share this because Ethan was not ready to face that truth:

He wanted the easy route.
He wanted fast money.
He wanted the "hack".

I’m sorry to break the news, my friends:

The only hack in entrepreneurship is working hard for 365 days in a row until the line starts to curve up.

This is what entrepreneurship actually looks like:
Now... let me let you in on another secret:

If it was easy, then everyone would do it!

This is a feature, not a bug.

When things get really hard, that's when you keep going.

So instead, embrace the hardness!

Use this to your advantage!!

Building a business is the hardest thing I’ve personally ever done.

But when it starts to work – and it will work if you put in the time – there are no words to describe it.

When that line starts to move, even by a centimeter, you feel on top of the world.

That first email. That first dollar. That first customer. That first million.

That makes it all worth it.

––
Now, here's my question for you:

How bad do YOU want this?

You can sit around dreaming for years about the lifestyle or business you want.

You can follow the next Twitter guru telling you all about their easy business.

You can be like Ethan and waste years of your life waiting to be ready.

Or

It’s the only place on the internet with no BS about starting a business.

Where real entrepreneurs share real stories behind their million dollar businesses.

Starter Story is what I wished existed when I first started my journey.

I guarantee I would have gotten to where I’m at today 5x faster with it.

Inside we’ve got:
  1. Case studies in every business category imaginable
  2. Deep dives that help you find and validate ideas
  3. And a real community to push you in your journey
No more hacks.

No more comfort.

Just action.

It’s time.

Hey there,

Tomorrow is a big day.

Reddit is going public!

Yep, Reddit will IPO at a valuation of $6.4B.

And I will be purchasing... 1 share 🤣

Yep, only 1.

Why?

Because Reddit turned me into a millionaire.

Thanks to one simple hack.

Today I'm going to share with you the story of how I stole millions of users from one subreddit, in plain sight.

––

It’s 2017.

Launch day for my new website: starterstory.com

Stories about how regular people started million dollar businesses.

I share it with friends.

And I'm ready for SUCCESS to start rolling in.

Then… crickets 🦗🦗🦗

A whopping 300 people visit my website in the entire first month…

I learn startup lesson #428:

"If you build it, they WON'T come."

––

Ok... time to figure out this thing called "marketing".

Let's try the shotgun approach.

I share my website EVERYWHERE:

Twitter, Instagram, FB, Pinterest, Quora, Imgur, Hacker News, etc.

Again I'm just waiting for the SUCCESS to start rolling in…

CRICKETS 🦗🦗🦗🦗🦗🦗

––

So I start searching Google for more ideas.

I came across a discussion on Reddit.

And then it hits me:

Could I get Starter Story on the front page of Reddit?

I check to see if there’s a subreddit for entrepreneurship.

Sure enough, there is.

r/entrepreneur

A subreddit with 3.2M users.

What if I posted the link to my website on there?

Let's give it a shot

NOPE.

"Your post has been removed. Goes against our spam rules"

F*%$

Let's check out these so-called "rules":

"#1: No link posts. Only self-posts (text posts) allowed."

Alright… new idea:

What if I copy & paste my content into a self post?

Let's try it:
The next morning:

Holy sh*t.

I'm on the front page of Reddit:

• 400+ upvotes.
• Over 50K views.
• Hundreds of people on my website.

This was the actual post:
I'm jumping around my room.

But then I realize something.

This is way bigger than just one post.

I think I've just found a home run user distribution channel.

Time to double down.

I rinse and repeat literally hundreds of times:
2 years & 100s of posts later, I've got:

• Tens of millions of impressions on my content
• 1M+ visitors to my website
• Starter Story hits $10k/month
Now I know what you're thinking right now.

"I gotta try this"

But… I'm sorry to say...

What worked 5 years ago probably won't work today.

Eventually, a Reddit mob formed and turned against me:
But at that point, I was already onto my next move.

I was pivoting to SEO.

I'd found another way to get 10s of millions of users for my product.

This time, from Google:
I don't share this story to brag, but to share with you how a single distribution channel can change your life.

Here's how I'd do that in 2024:

1. Study what successful businesses are actually doing
2. Take action & try lots of things
3. Don't stop until you find one thing that works
4. Once you do, go all in, and scale the sh*t out of it

If you're serious about finding something like this for your business, then you should consider joining Starter Story.

You can study the home run distribution channels of 4,000+ successful online businesses.

"I just wired you $26,352"

2 min read
I'll admit it - when I first started my business I was solely focused on myself.

I wanted to get rich and change my own life.

But one day, something happened that completely changed all of that.

This is something I’ve never shared online before.

Today I'm going to share with you that story:

––

My mom and dad got divorced right after I graduated from college.

If you’re a kid of divorce, you know how hard that is on the family – especially on finances.

It was especially tough on my mom.

For respect of her privacy, I'm not going to go into all of the details.

But what I will say is: My mom grew up with nothing. She worked her ass off to build a family, put food on the table, and put us through school.

Whenever we needed anything - she would be there - no questions asked.

But financially, she didn't end up with a whole lot.

––

As I built my business over the years, I always knew in the back of my head that I wanted to repay her for this.

I just didn't know how.

Until one day, everything changed:

My mom noticed a strange noise coming from the engine of her car.

She took it to the shop.

Mechanic: "Ma'am you're going to need a new engine."

Her car was totaled. It would cost more to fix than the car was worth.

She didn't tell anyone about it. She didn't want any handouts.

She went straight to the dealership and bought another car.

And financed it with a shitty high-interest auto loan.

A few days later, she texted me to tell me about her new car and how much money it was going to cost per month:

"It was my best option. Don’t worry, I’ll figure it out.”

And at that very moment, the lightbulb went off in my head.

Later that night, I Facetimed her.

She started telling me about the new car.

She was excited about it, but also weary of the $700/month payment she'd have for the next 5 years.

I could tell she was holding back.

See, my mom is a fighter.

Even though she’s been through hell, she’d never put that on me.

She’s always managed to figure it out.

I paused her and said:

“Mom… I know things have been tough. You’ve always been there for me. And now I want to be there for you.”

And I let her know that I wired $26,352 into her bank account.

Enough to pay off the car in full.

The best money I’ve ever spent.

And one of the proudest moments of my life.

––

I don’t share this to show off or tell you how great I am.

I share this to show you how building a business can not only change your life.

It can change the lives of the people you love most!

It's bigger than you :)

I believe every aspiring founder wants to do something like this.

Maybe you hope to retire your parents.

Or pay off their house.

Or just take your friends or family to dinner and cover the check.

You have really big dreams.

But... where do you start?

I built Starter Story for average people like you and me.

I believe you have a business idea in your head that just needs a little nudge.

You are just one step away from changing the trajectory of your life.

And changing the lives of the people you love most.

So next week, I invite you to join my free workshop.

It's how I built a $1M business on 2 hours a day.

(and how you can, too)

Hey it's Pat from Starter Story,

I’m coming back from filming some YouTube videos in Denver this week – it's been awesome.

I love connecting with founders who are building incredible businesses all around the country.

Keep your eye on the channel. We’ve got some really great ones coming up!

Today I’m excited to bring you 5 case studies from founders in 5 very different industries.

One guy makes money playing online solitaire.

Another founder built a stupidly simple converter tool.

And then this other guy… well, let’s just say he smoked the competition.

But first, let's talk about Walmart.

There's no better place to expand your business than on Walmart.com.

Reach millions of loyal customers with:

  • Streamlined fulfillment
  • Targeted advertising

  • Automated pricing strategies

All tailored to help your business grow. New sellers can save up to 50% on referral and fulfillment fees.*

And with that... Welcome to Sunday Breakfast:

1. The Orange Juice 🍊

The simplest way to make money online is from display ads.

And this guy found the perfect formula in the perfect niche.

He bought a website doing < $500 per month and with terrible SEO.

All he did was make a few tweaks and suddenly the business started to grow.

Today he makes $4K per month and barely even touches the site.

Now all he does is play games all day :)

2. The Coffee ☕

He made his Airbnbs 420-friendly and turned it into $18K per month

When people go on vacation, they just need to have a good time.

But this guy kept running into trouble with “traditional” rental hosts.

So he turned his problem into his unique advantage.

What started as a small idea, has expanded across the US.

Turns out a lot of people shared his desire for a cannabis-friendly community.

Now, he’s just vibin’ all day

Check out his story here.

We'll help you build the side project that changes your life.

Without quitting your day job.

3. The Eggs 🍳

This simple quiz app makes $3M ARR

These guys had been building projects since they were 15.

While in college, they got this idea to build a simple app.

Let’s make it easy for businesses to make online quizzes.

So they built it in a weekend, did a little marketing, and got a few paying customers.

Here’s the thing… they barely made any money for 6 years.

But they had a tiny group of customers who LOVED the product, so they kept it alive.

Just when they were about to give up, they saw an uptick and it just kept growing.

Today they do almost a million page views and $250K per month.

Incredible.

Get the full breakdown here.

Tap into Walmart's vast network of loyal customers and start elevating your business today.

4. The Toast 🥪

This guy found the perfect niche to build his product: bachelorette parties.

My girlfriend tells me that bachelorette parties are a nightmare to plan, so I had to keep reading.

They built the MVP quickly and had a waitlist of 50,000 users.

Within 60 days of launch, they had 100,000 users.

6 months later they hit a $1M run rate

Today? $500K per month

5. The Pancakes 🥞

These are my absolutely favorite case studies and founders.

This guy wanted to do something stupidly simple: get a CSV feed of his bank transactions.

But his bank would only give him PDFs

There was literally no way to turn PDFs into Excel files…

Until he built it himself.

He figured if he had this problem, so would a lot of people.

He was right.

When we wrote this case study, he was making ~$12K/month

But I just found out he’s doubled that in less than one year 👀

–––

That's it!

I hope you have the best Sunday, and are getting ready for a great week ahead!

Pat

I told Kanye "I quit"

Read Time: 2 min, 14 sec
Hey there,

Today, I've got a fun story for you.

Something that I've never shared online...

But I'm in the airport lounge right now waiting for a flight - and I've got a few minutes.

It all starts about 4 years ago, when I get a call from my friend Jon.

Jon: "Hey man - you want to come out and help out at the ranch?"

Me: "What ranch?"

Jon: "I'm out here with Kanye and his team and we need some extra hands while he's recording his album."

I nearly dropped the phone in disbelief.

Kanye is my favorite artist person of all time.

Of course I said yes - how could I turn down this opportunity?

I get in my car and start the 5 hour drive to the secret location Jon sends me.

I have no idea what's about to happen.

But I'm so f*ing excited.

"I'm going to meet Kanye West."

"I'm going to meet his team of A-players."

"This is going to change my life."

I get to the location, walk inside, and sit down at one of the desks.

His whole team is in there working.

Then, Kanye walks in and starts walking towards me.

He shakes my hand, and introduces himself. He is cordial.

Then, he immediately turns to my friend Jon (who hired me) and says:

"I don't want anyone new joining my team without my DIRECT approval."

😳

I put my head down and pretend I don't hear him.

Yep. That was my first interaction with Kanye West.

--

For the next couple days, his team starts giving me orders.

Here's what I learn they need my "help" with:

- Chauffeuring the artists around
- Picking up pizza for the team
- Driving people to Dairy Queen
- Making sure Kanye always has enough snacks

Yep, I'm running errands all day.

I'm the bottom of the totem pole.

It's not a big deal though... I've worked minimum wage service jobs before.

But... here's the problem:

At this point, I've already quit my full time job and started my own business.

And this business is making money.

Yet I'm out here on Kanye's ranch... picking up Dairy Queen orders?

Then it gets worse...

I start to meet his team.

These so-called A-players...

And guess what? They all clearly hate working there.

They're all complaining about their bosses, gossiping about coworkers, and not really doing anything productive.

It's like every other company I've worked at...

This place reminds me why I quit my job in the first place.

It reminds me why I'll NEVER be happy working for someone else.

(even if that person happens to be the greatest artist of our generation)

Here's what I realize:

I don't want to work for Kanye.

I want to work with Kanye.

And Kanye did not become Kanye by working for someone else.

He became Kanye by creating his own sh*t!

After 4 days of working for Kanye, I tell my friend:

"Hey man - I'm gonna head home and get back to working on my business."

--

I quit working for Kanye.

And on that drive home from the ranch, I've never felt more conviction that I was on the right path.

Since then I built Starter Story into a business that's generated millions of dollars.

I'm grateful I got to meet Kanye because it reminded me why I never want to have a boss for the rest of my life :)

If you also feel this way, then you should check out the workshop I'm running on Monday.

It's how I built a $1M business on 2 hours a day (without quitting my job).

(^^ we are running out of spots just FYI)

I hope this story inspired you :)

Don't meet your heroes!

113% vs. 13,000%

2 min & 33 sec read
Hey it’s Pat,

I want to get your opinion on something.

Let's say I gave you these two options:
  • Option 1: Increase your salary 113% in 5 years
  • Option 2: Increase your salary 13,000% in 7 years
Which one would you take?

I'm willing to bet you chose Option 2 (why wouldn't you).

But... 99% of people actually choose Option 1.

Let me explain.

––

So, my very first salary out of college was $54K.

And each year after, it slowly increased as I got promotions or switched jobs:
  • Year 2: $60K
  • Year 3: $80K
  • Year 4: $105K
  • Year 5: $115K
From year 1 to 5, it had grown 113%.

Not bad, right?

But here’s the truth: I was miserable.

I didn’t have any control over my life.

I sat on Slack from 9am to 6pm. I didn't give a sh*t about my projects.

I was building someone else’s company.

From the outside it looked like I had a dream job life.

But on the inside, I was slowly dying.

I prayed for Fridays so I could start my “real” life.

This is how 99% of people live.

They spend 40 years working at companies that don’t give a sh*t about them.

Companies that would lay them off in an instant if it improved their bottom line.

And all the while living for the weekend.

I knew it didn’t have to be like this.

––

I started building Starter Story in 2017.

• I built it in the mornings before work.
• Late into the night after work.
• And on every weekend I possibly could.

It wasn’t long before I was making a little bit of extra money every month.

But many of my friends laughed at me:
  • WTF are you doing?
  • You have a stable job… focus on that!
  • That’s a cute idea… I hope it works
In my first full year I made just… $12,000.

I came home for Christmas and my family shook their heads at me.

What they saw as a silly side quest... I saw as my ticket out!

––

So I kept building.

I had a feeling I was onto something.

I wasn't even making six figures, but I was building MY DREAM.

Then I started cranking:
  • Year 2: $67K
  • Year 3: $186K
  • Year 4: $497K
  • Year 5: $752K
  • Year 6: $1.8M
This year… we’re on track to do even more.

The result: I’ve grown 13,000% since I launched Starter Story.

Now all those friends say:
  • "You are a genius"
  • "I knew it all along"
  • "Can I pitch you my idea?"
Funny how that works...

––

Here’s the thing only founders understand:

Salaries grow 5-10% every year.

But businesses have no ceiling for growth.

Most people are happy with a 5-10% bump in salary every few years.

That becomes the normal, the standard.

Meanwhile, a business can grow 2x or 3x or 10x (especially in the early years)

And if you keep testing and iterating, there’s very little in the way of growing 100x over several years.

––

I’m going to give you those two options again:
  • Option 1: Choose the 113% salary mindset.
  • Option 2: Choose 13,000% founder mindset - and join Starter Story to surround yourself with thousands of others doing the same thing.

Most people say they want option 2.

But 99% of people choose option 1.

I'm running a workshop on Monday where I'll walk through Option 2 a bit more.

And how I built a $1M on two hours a day - while I had a full time job:

Don't be like Ethan

2 min & 20 sec read
Hey it’s Pat,

I need to tell you about my friend Ethan.

(I love the guy - we've been friends since college)

But I'm frustrated with him...

A couple weeks ago Ethan texted me:

“hey man… Did you see what's happening with Google's AI?”

Of course I didn’t 🙄

(I don't really follow the news, I focus on building a business)

I responded, “No… what’s going on?”

He then proceeded to text me a novel about Google and their latest AI controversy…

I kid you not – it looked something like this ↓

After he sent it, I didn’t know how to respond.

“Wow. Sounds crazy” is all I could muster up.

––

See, my friend Ethan has a six-figure remote tech job.

He spends 8 hours every day:

- sending emails.
- muted on Zoom meetings.
- scrolling Twitter.

He's bored out of his skull, so he texts me novels about something completely out of his control.

But... you know what's even worse?

He hates his job.

And he tells me every day he wants to eventually have a business like mine.

But... he just "needs a little more time", "needs the right idea", etc etc.

Unfortunately, my friend Ethan is what we call a serial wantrepreneur.

You know this type, right? The guy who:
  • listens to 10 business podcasts every week
  • gets a hare-brained business idea every week from some online guru
  • always on top of every trend (no code, web3, crypto, etc etc etc)
They talk a lot about business, but when you ask them about their business, they always say:

“...I’m working on it.”

A serial wantrepreneur is someone who loves the idea of business more than actually doing business.

They want to be a founder, but they don't want to do the work.

––

Ok back to our conversation about Google.

Let's see if we can change the subject.

I ask Ethan about that business idea he's been telling me about.

And I decide to send him a few Starter Story case studies.

"Ethan, I think you should read these 3 case studies".

"These are stories of exactly how people just like you (working in tech) found an idea, got started on the site (without quitting their job) and then built a $1M business that changed their life."

I'm waiting for his response.

Crickets...

I don't hear from Ethan for a few days.

Expected.

A week later I text him again:

“Hey Ethan! Did you read that case study I sent you? The one about the guy who built that $1M AI app before quitting his job?”

Crickets...

Finally – 2 WEEKS LATER – later he responds:

“Nah, haven’t read it yet. I’m working on it.”

Classic Ethan response...

Ethan is so close to success…yet so far away.

––

I think this is the problem.

People like Ethan want to quit their jobs and find a business idea that can replace their full-time income.

Yet they spend all their time on Twitter consuming irrelevant information.

And even worse, they follow business stories about Google, OpenAI, etc - and get advice and information from billionaire founders like Elon Musk and Sam Altman.

Instead, what if you studied founders who were just a few steps ahead of where you want to be.

Imagine you could see exactly how they built their business (without even quitting your jobs).

And that’s exactly why I built Starter Story.

I was sick of billion dollar stories.
I was bored of Jobs, Musk, and Bezos breakdowns.
I was done with business books.

I became obsessed with small startups and solo businesses making $10-50K per month.

Businesses that could actually change the lives of regular folks likeyou and me.

I don’t think you’ll learn anything useful from reading another business book or listening to another business podcast.

But you will learn practical and tactical information on Starter Story. Stuff that you can’t find anywhere else on the internet.

You’ll learn something that can help you today. Not in 10 years.

Don’t be a wantrepreneur who talks a lot about business. Don't be Ethan.

Be an entrepreneur who actually builds a business.

I dare you to join us at Starter Story.

Search for ANY business idea.

And I guarantee you will find something you can use right now.

There are no more excuses. It’s all right at your fingertips.

Don’t be like Ethan.

Ok... this is crazy.

So I’m working from a coffee shop right now.

I’ve been here for 2 hours.

There’s a girl who’s been here as long as me.

She’s sitting in front of me and, from my view, I can see her screen.

Every 15 minutes or so, I’ll look up and get a glimpse of what she's working on.

Every single time I look up, it’s the same thing: Gmail.

She's not really doing anything either, she's just got Gmail open and is sitting there on her phone - where she's been having long conversations with someone over text and scrolling TikTok.

No offense to this girl (I don't know her), but... why is she here?

It's during work hours, but is she actually working? Is she getting anything done?

If I were her, I’d do all my emails in 15 minutes, log off, go outside and enjoy my day.

Because when I’m at the coffee shop, I am GETTING SHIT DONE.

I’m doing deep work. I’m writing, coding, and planning how my business can make more money.

(btw - I have no problem with how this girl spends her time - it’s just really not my style)

But anyways… this got me thinking…

"What else are people working on at this coffee shop?"

I NEED to know!

So I get up out of my seat and start walking around, peaking at everyone’s screen to see what they’re working on.

I’m collecting data :)

Here are the results:

1. 8 people: email, slack, iMessage, etc
2. 5 people: social media, twitter, tiktok etc
3. 0 people: Deep work: writing, coding, spreadsheets

This ain't a scientific study, but it confirmed what I feared.

Distraction runs the world.

Thousands of apps, notifications, etc are vying for our attention every second of our day.

Stealing us away from the businesses we could be building and the lives we could actually be living.

What's even worse are the distractions that feel like work, but are still distractions...

Like email, or Slack.

Where you feel "productive", but did you actually get something done? Did you actually create or improve something? Did you actually make a difference?

Ok... this is depressing.

Nobody is actually getting work done.

So what's the fix for this?

One word: Focus.

I believe focus is the secret superpower that runs the world.

Only 5% of people really learn it, but these are the people that create the products, content, and companies that change the world.

And the people who make a lot of money in the process.

Just even having a little bit of focus gives you a competitive advantage ahead of nearly everyone else.

I’ve talked to and studied thousands of successful founders.

And this is the most common trait: focus!

Don’t believe me? Just google “Bill gates focus” and see what comes up.

Want to understand more about what I mean by focus?

And how founders use focus to find $1M ideas that change their lives?

Then you should check out the workshop I’m doing this evening.

It’s how I built a $1M business, thanks to this one thing - focus :)
